The Headmaster

-
In sixth grade of primary school we were taught by the headmaster. That year was his last before his retirement, and he was ready for it! Often he would sit dozing at his desk, leaving us to fend for ourselves. I don’t think we learnt much during that time, and it is a miracle we passed at all for our entrance exams into secondary school.
One day some boys had done something that had made the headmaster flare up in a rage. He ordered the boys to come to the front of the room, and one by one he had them bend over his lap to spank their bottoms. The boys were quietly standing in the corner, waiting for their turn, and we were aghast as we watched the whole procedure.
Physical punishment had long been banned in the Netherlands, but I doubt if anyone ever considered reporting the man. We felt as embarrassed for the boys as for the headmaster himself. It was a pitiful and humiliating experience for all concerned, including the shocked audience.
And we lost all respect for our headmaster.

An Old Teenager

-
She was at least fifty years old, behaving like a teenager. Her hair long and blond, streaking down her shoulders in long, sleek strands. She needed large, circular movements to toss it out of her face, so her head kept making big loops in the air. All the while she was talking, gesturing, bending forward and backward to act out her story. Just like a fourteen-year old who has sniffed boys in the vicinity.
So far her canvassing behaviour had been unsuccessful. There were no men lurking nearer. In fact, there was a vacuum between her and the rest of the room. Only her friend pretended to be interested in her play-acting.
But her hair tossed on, and her body still ran in circles.

The Rain Last Night

-
So grateful for the rain last night,
feeding the earth,
refreshing the leaves
on the trees,
the grass.

So grateful for
the drops trickling
down the windowpane,
soothing drops,
reassuring.

The water
has come
at last.

Potatoes, Anchovis and Onions

-
This is a delicious recipe:
Scrub new potatoes and cut to reasonable size. Mix with sliced onions, a can of chopped anchovis (discard the oil; it is usually not so nice), olive oil and pepper.
Roast in a hot oven. After about ten minutes add double cream.
When done the potatoes should be soft, the anchovis all but disappeared and the cream caramelized.

Witch-hunt

-
The witch-hunt on ms Hirsi Ali has been opened, because she has committed crime number one against the Netherlands: she has LIED.
Dutch people never lie. They don’t embezzle money, they are not tax dodgers, and politicians are always open and straightforward. Nobody ever lies in the Netherlands, except asylum seekers. They lie all the time, and when they are found out: “Off with their heads!”
Don’t get me wrong. I belong to the anti Hirsi Ali camp. I think she is a stubborn, self-promoting fanatic, fighting the right cause in the wrong way. I think she polarizes, antagonizes, I think she is pigheaded. And she has cleverly used the Dutch Liberal Party for her own ends.
Far more shameful, however, is the dishonesty of that Dutch Liberal Party. They knew all along that Hirsi Ali had lied about her refugee story. They never minded, because they had fallen in love with her. They were all buzzing around her like bees around a flowering bush. But now that her usefulness has been played out, now that her lying has been made public, now they are crucifying her. She lied, so she is not entitled to her Dutch citizenship. “Off with her head!”
Shakespearean drama in the Low Countries!

Leftover Peas

-
I had been too greedy, so we had a lot of leftover peas. I sautéed a generous amount of coarsely chopped spring onions in butter and olive oil, until slightly caramilized (the chic word for browned or burnt) and softened. Added the peas with some salt and warmed them through and through.
P.'s mother used to add a little sugar to her peas. Absolutely unnecessary! In this recipe the sweetness of the peas is intensified by the spring onions.

Who needs gourmet dinners with a dish like this!

Joe Speedboot

-
Goed, genoeg geklaagd.
Geen Librisprijs voor Wieringa.
Bok voor hem, zou S. zeggen.

Magic Bowl

-
Habits may turn into rituals without one being aware.
When the children were small, they would invariably be hungry at the end of the day. P would come home rather late, but we valued having dinner together with the children. So I would tide over that cranky period by planting them in front of Sesame Street with a “bowl” each. It contained squares of cheese or lunch meat, slices of cucumber or apple, packages of Sunmaid raisons, a handful of potato chips –most of it healthy stuff, not always.
When they were older and they asked for a “bowl”, I said they could make it themselves. O no! The charm of a “bowl” was the surprise of what was in it.
Both children still talk about what magic this ritual held for them.
We did all right then!

Peas

-
This is the time to enjoy all those new, fresh vegetables! Peas in the pod, and broad beans, etc.

Shell them, boil them quickly and shortly until they are tender, but still with a bite. And eat them like that. With new potatoes and butter.

The taste of spring!

Hartstocht

-

Writing Group

-
My writing group is ruthlessly critical and wonderfully inspiring. Every time I come away from them, after they have clobbered my work, I feel energetic and ready to take on the task of changing and revising my stories.
This time I offered them the first two chapters of my “finished” historical novel. Their verdict: well written, interesting detail. HOWEVER: you’re flaunting your knowledge, your plot is cliché, and so are some of your scenes. Fortunately, after they have wielded the axe, they do a lot of brainstorming, where their fantasy takes on wings, and they go over the top, but that is all right. I can pick and choose; I can fly off with my own imagination.
So here I am, back behind the computer, constructing a whole new plot. I can still retain a lot of the material I have. Inevitably, though, I will also have to kill some darlings.
They will be posted here in the course of time. In Dutch, I’m afraid.

Ja, zeg 't es

-
Ja, zeg ’t es.
Wat mag het zijn?
Een onsje meer of minder
kan geen kwaad.
Mooi weer vandaag.
Ik ga ervoor.
Zo is het leven.
Straks zit ie vast,
Kijk mij nou weer.
Dat heb je ervan.
Eigen schuld.
Mij niet gezien.
Zo kan ik nog
wel uren doorgaan.
Nog iets anders gewenst?

God, wat een onzin!
