The Dutch have a reputation for tolerance, although I believe we are losing it now. Well, the Dutch may have gone through tolerant patches, but there have also been intolerant times. In 1730, for instance, there were actual pogroms against gay men. They happened in other European countries, but the Dutch were the most severe.
Persecutions are generally based on fear of the unknown. It was so then – against homosexuality. It is so now – against veiled Islamic women.
Against fear we have no defence. Unfortunately
